July 19 2004: Heliums Sink - Product Recall
In house testing has revealed a potentially serious problem with some HELIUM KARABINERS. Wild Country are requesting the immediate return of all HELIUM KARABINERS AND QUICKDRAWS marked with the following batch codes:

AAA, AAB, AAC, AAD, AAE, AAF

There was report of Wild Country flexible technical friends shaft break off on a fall many years ago. Don’t fall on Wild Country flexible friends.

Premier Post - Wild Country Ltd. Helium Karabiner Recall

Tideswell, Derbyshire (July 15th 2004) – Wild Country Ltd announce the recall of all Helium karabiners supplied to retail stores between April and July 2004.

In-process testing has identified a problem with a limited number of karabiners concerning the location of the gate on the nose of the karabiner under load. Should this problem occur in use the minimum breaking strength of the karabiner would be the \"Gate Open\" strength of 10kN.

Please arrange for the immediate return of all Helium karabiners to;

Wild Country Ltd, Meverill Rd, Tideswell, nr Buxton, Derbyshire, SK17 8PY.

The products concerned are;

HELIUM - CLEAN WIRE - RED or SILVER
HELIUM 10MM DYNEEMA Quickdraw 13 or 18cm
OXYGEN-HELIUM 12mm Quickdraw 10 or 15 cm

The karabiners are marked with Batch Codes; AAA, AAB, AAC, AAD, AAE and AAF

All karabiners returned will be inspected and further testing will be undertaken.

We will be posting on web-sites and in forums as more information becomes available.

請問文章中提到當初斷裂的 friend 是否是如圖的方法放置的? 因為我看過其他網站的 friend 的斷裂照片, 是因為當初是使用這種危險放置法才斷掉的.

那時候剛發現這款新的 WC clean-wire helium 鉤環本來很想買的....
只有 33 克重, 比一般 wire gate 40多克輕了快 10克!
而且 這款鼻子沒有倒鉤, 比較不會鉤到東西, 不過那時覺得有些疑慮沒有買...
- 新產品不想當白老鼠.
- 鼻子的設計怪怪的, 看產品介紹的鼻子圖片, 照那個結構來推想, 鼻子會有多大啊? (以 DMM Wirelock 來說, 鼻子就已經夠大了, 插不進 我冰斧的 spike hole, 那 WC clean-wire helium 鼻子設計看起來更複雜, 鼻子不會更大不能插的東西更多嗎?)
- I 字型截面設計, 不知道強度和三角截面的設計比較差異如何?
- 已經有的鉤環太多了, 別衝動! 明年還會發明更好的產品.
- 有些貴, US$10 一個.

I did not recall what happen. But it was a manufacturer failure where the cable of friend attachment breaks off from a Wild Country flexible friend.
The friend placement in the picture shown will be a leader’s fault. The friend places in shallow crack like the picture shown (I am assuming the dark shadow area is solid rock), if the leader falls, the friend will likely be popping off from the crack, but the friend’s cable should not break off. In shallow vertical crack like this, I would use stoppers pulling downward.

“I asked Steve Bechtel about the recall. He said Wild Country had two bad batches but decided to recall all the heliums just to be on the safe side. First recall Wild Country has ever had. Too bad, they were very proud of that record. Compare to Black Diamond which has a recall about every year . . .
